Ecolos
ECOLOS is a green public transportation; it offers a ferry service on the Ottawa river between Clarence Island and Thurso. This ferry is unique because of its zero emission propulsion system that is energized by batteries which are recharged by the grid power.
The ferry was purchased from the Ministry of Ontario and went threw extensive upgrades. The cables and drive system were modified and repositioned to minimize boat traffic and cable collision. The diesel propulsion system used by MTO was eliminated and replace with electric drives. The ferry was widen to accommodate the batteries which eliminated the counter weights. The wheelhouse was replaced to improve visibility and comfort.
ECOLOS is a cable ferry that gains efficiency by not having props meaning no water agitation, smaller engines and less noise than the conventional ferry.
